School of Engineering NEW PhD Scholarships School of Engineering University of Edinburgh

If you are thinking of applying for a PhD in Engineering then the University of Edinburgh should be on your list. Engineering has a long history at the University of Edinburgh, since the formation of the Regius Chair in 1868, spanning more than 130 years of research and development. Many of our staff have international reputations and we provide an excellent opportunity to learn from these respected experts.

We are looking for outstanding and motivated students to apply for various Scholarships that will be offered by the School of Engineering to begin study in October 2011. Students can apply for SORSAS, Principal’s Career Development Scholarships, China Scholarships and EPSRC DTG studentships. Students will be based in one of our five diverse Research Institutes:

The Institute for Materials and Processes (IMP) joins researchers from materials science, materials synthesis and processing, and manufacturing optimisation.

The Institute for Integrated Micro and Nano Systems (IMNS) The Institute for Integrated Micro and Nano Systems brings together researchers from integrated circuit design, system-on-chip design, microfabrication, micro-electro mechanical systems (MEMS), micro-machining and neural computation. The Institute's facilities include a substantial design and test resource, a comprehensive silicon and MEMS fabrication capability which are based at the Scottish Microelectronics Centre (SMC).

The Institute for Digital Communications (IDCOM) is committed to research in digital signal processing and its application to communications, radar, audio and medical systems; and future systems and services for automated telephone and advanced Internet communication.

The Institute for Energy Systems (IES) conducts world-class research into the systems that control the conversion, transmission and utilisation of many forms of energy. IES has particular and long standing expertise in marine (wave and tidal current) renewable energy and leads the UK’s SuperGen MARINE research programme.

The Institute for Infrastructure and Environment (IIE) has five research groups that cover a remarkable range of topics within the Infrastructure, Environment and Civil Engineering fields, with a focus on interdisciplinary and emerging areas. The BRE Centre for Fire Safety Engineering is part of the Institute for Infrastructure and Environment ; the Centre is a world-class research fire centre with 40 research members from more than 18 different nationalities.
